Eileen Fisher

In 1984, I started EILEEN FISHER for a very personal reason: I was having trouble getting dressed. At the time I was working as an interior and graphic designer. In my mind I kept seeing these simple shapes for clothes. I knew they had to be beautiful colors, great fabrics and have certain shapes and proportions. This was my “aha” moment: a system of shapes that worked together and made getting dressed easy.

Although I couldn't sew and only had $350 in the bank, I designed four shapes and took them to The Boutique Show in New York. That’s how my business began—with 3,000 in orders. Today EILEEN FISHER, Inc. has grown to 1100 people and more than 65 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Design continues to drive our business. I believe that good design is the result of paying attention to what women want and need. From the beginning, I've set out to make clothes you don't have to think too much about. I hope wearing them gives you a sense of comfort and confidence. There’s a magic that happens when you put on a piece of clothing that’s been pared to its simple, pure essence. It comes alive on your body. It makes you move differently. It changes the way you feel about yourself.

I also believe that business can make a positive difference in the world. That’s why we’re committed to sustainable fibers and working to close the loop on our manufacturing—and we’re taking our clothes back and making them into entirely new designs through Renew and Waste No More. But there's much more to do. I believe we can actually leave places we touch better than we found them. I believe that business can be a movement.

Renew, Waste No More, Women Together and the Eileen Fisher Leadership Institute—just four more ways we’re committed to changing the clothing industry and women's lives.

Clothes are where we start. We believe they should be ethical, timeless, well-made clothes designed to work together, wear effortlessly and be part of a responsible lifecycle. We challenge ourselves daily as we work to meet—and exceed—both our VISION2020 goals and the requirements for B Corp Certification.

Begun in 2009, Renew is a take-back program that gives EILEEN FISHER clothes life beyond your closet. You bring back your old pieces, and we find them another home—or turn them into entirely new designs. Because making clothes is a lifetime commitment.

Waste No More is part of a circular system designed to upend the conventional cycle of consumerism. We’re taking our clothes back—over 1.4 million so far—and transforming the pieces that are damaged beyond repair into entirely new designs.
