A key difference between us and other online retailers is our commitment to supporting Australian authors and publishers, and the fact that we are an Australian operation. We know the books we sell, and we know the book market. We’ve been early champions of many bestselling Australian authors, including Trent Dalton, whose Boy Swallows Universe went on to become one of the bestselling Australian novels of all time.
Many of us got our careers started in independent bookstores, and we will always hold them near and dear to our hearts. We know that there are some amazing independent bookstores around the country - beloved stores filled with passionate and knowledgeable booksellers who are part of your community. Being Good Corporate Citizens
As we’ve grown, we’ve wanted our success to equal the success of the book industry and our charity partners and have donated over $1 million in cash and books over the years.
Since 2011, we’ve donated over $550,000 worth of books to the Cathy Freeman Foundation, supporting the literacy and education of Indigenous children in remote communities including Palm Island QLD, Wurrumiyanga NT, Galiwin’ku NT and Woorabinda QLD. We are also strong supporters of the Indigenous Literacy Program, and use our voice and platform to promote and highlight the works and stories of First Nations authors across our website and promotional campaigns.
We have also partnered with Good360, an Australian Not For Profit to match donations of books to worthy charitable organisations, non-profit causes and schools across the country. Find out more about our partnership and how to qualify for book donations here.
In 2019, we established the Favourite Australian Book Award, a $5,000 prize for an Australian author, as chosen by our fans and customers annually. In 2021 over 100,000 Australians voted in this award, bringing attention, recognition and support to a great many Australian authors.
We have also sponsored several major industry awards and events, including the Australian Book Industry Association Awards (ABIAs).
